OAKLAND PARK, Fla. -

The Broward Sheriff's Office is searching for the driver of a vehicle that hit and killed a 17-year-old boy on a bicycle Thursday.

Investigators said Gabriel Amaya was riding a bike west on Prospect Road at Powerline Road when a light blue SUV or pickup truck hit the front tire on his bike.

Amaya was thrown from the bike and onto the roadway.

BSO said the driver stopped a short distance away, got out of the vehicle for a second, then got back in and drove away.

Amaya was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

BSO said the SUV or truck's paint job may have been after-market.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
