The Broward County Commission voted in favor of keeping the air control tower at North Perry General Aviation Airport open.

The commission voted to pay the salaries of employees at the tower until September 30, when the fiscal year ends.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced it would close 149 federal contract air control towers, including at North Perry and Boca Raton Airport, beginning April 7 as a result of automatic spending cuts imposed by the federal government.

According to the FAA, North Perry is the ninth busiest contract tower. The FAA is keeping the tower at Opa-locka Executive Airport open.

In a letter to the county commission, Broward Director of Aviation Kent George said it would cost $43,000 a month plus an additional one-time cost of $5,000 for insurance to keep the tower open.
