ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A group that is opposed to the demolition of the city's pier and the construction of a new, $50 million structure has filed petitions with the city to take the issue to voters — or to scrap the plan altogether.
Concerned Citizens of St. Petersburg delivered boxes filled with petitions to City Hall on Wednesday.
The group seeks to get a referendum on the ballot so voters can decide the fate of the project.
If the signatures are certified, the City Council will vote on whether to approve an ordinance submitted by Concerned Citizens. If the ordinance passes, plans to build the new pier, called The Lens, will be scrapped. If the ordinance fails, the issue likely will appear on the ballot for the Aug. 27 city primary.
