A woman who fled to Colombia during the middle of a 2006 health care fraud trial in Miami is back in a U.S. jail.
Authorities said Thursday that 55-year-old Magda Luz Lavin was recently arrested in Colombia and extradited to the U.S. Even though she fled during the trial, a jury convicted her of 25 health care fraud and money laundering counts and she was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.
Now Luz Lavin is also facing a bond-jumping charge.
Trial evidence showed Luz Lavin used clinics in Key West and Miami to defraud Medicare out of some $5 million between 2000 and 2002. The fraud involved claims for dosages of drugs for HIV-positive patients that were either never administered or were given in much lower dosages than claimed.
