Peace walk dedicated to Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin Foundation holds walk to honor teen's birthday week

MIAMI – The Trayvon Martin Foundation honored the teenager who was shot and killed by a neighborhood watchman with a peace walk Saturday.

The Day of Remembrance Peace Walk is a free community event that will feature motivational speakers and entertainment. It begins at 10 a.m. at the Ives Estate Park at 20901 NE 16th Avenue in Miami.

Martin would have celebrated his 18th birthday on February 5. He was shot and killed by a neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman, in Sanford on February 26, 2012.

The peace walk is one of several events organized by the Foundation during Martin's birthday week.

On Tuesday, supporters held signs and sang "Happy Birthday" outside of a Sanford Courthouse, where a hearing for Zimmerman was being held. A judge decided not to delay the murder trial after Zimmerman's attorney asked for six more months to review evidence and raise money.

Zimmerman's parents did not attend the remembrance ceremony or the court proceeding. Their family attorney, Benjamin Crump, said they were "overcome with emotion."

The Justice For Trayvon Martin Foundation will also hold an inaugural remembrance dinner on Sunday night.
