Cops: Man fired shots in Lincoln Road bar
Ernesto Velazquez charging with firing gun outside Finnegan's Road
Police arrested a man who fired a gun into the air at a bar on Lincoln Road in South Beach.
Police arrested Ernesto Velazquez, 29, outside Finnegan's Road Irish Pub at 942 Lincoln Road about 10:50 p.m. Monday.
Police officers arrived at the bar after receiving several 911 calls about a man in a wheelchair waving a gun and firing it into the air, according to an arrest affidavit.
A waitress at the bar told police Velazquez and his brother arrived and asked to be seated. She suggested they sit outside because the tables are lower.
Police say Velazquez became upset and yelled at her, "What? You don't want to serve me?" He then grabbed a pistol from under his shirt and waved it around.
The waitress ran inside and told her manager, who came outside and asked Velazquez to put the gun away, police say. Velazquez then pointed the gun at the manager, who ran outside the bar and heard a loud bang.
A third employee said he heard a loud bang and saw several people run out of the bar. When he asked Velazquez what he was doing, the suspect pointed the gun at him without saying anything.
Police say Velazquez exited the bar and fired his gun again. He was then taken into custody.
Officers smelled alcohol on Velazquez's breath, according to the arrest affidavit. At one point, he told them, "I'm sake bombed."
Velazquez also told police, "I had too much to drink and I shot off a couple of rounds." The suspect told police he bought the pistol off someone on the street for $500 about six months ago.
Velazquez is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; discharging a firearm in public; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; and, disorderly conduct.
