Coral Springs firefighter arrested

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. ā€“ A former Coral Springs firefighter is accused of providing protection for a criminal informant who was delivering fake cocaine.

Santiago Gonzalez was arrested Jan. 24. He is being held at the Broward County Jail for the U.S. Marshals Service.

According to a criminal complaint, Gonzalez agreed to provide protection for a criminal informant who was picking up and delivering fake cocaine.

An agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives said Gonzalez should be charged with attempt to possess with the intent to distribute five or more kilograms of cocaine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense.

Gonzalez was hired in March 2003 as a firefighter/paramedic.
