Crews repair broken water line
Water main break closes streets in Fort Lauderdale
Water main break floods streets
A water main break closed streets in a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood Tuesday.
City representatives said the line that broke was an 8-inch drinking water line.
It is ironic that the neighborhood is called River Run, because that is exactly what it looked like when shortly before 6 a.m. when a city water main burst and flooded the streets.
"I am surprised. My wife just woke me up because she says there is a lot of water in the street, so I go, 'Maybe it rained,'" said Pedro Mazariegos, who lives in the area.
City utility workers scrambled to relieve pressure on the broken pipe and try to contain the flooding along Southwest 14th Street and Riverland Road, but many residents were stranded by the high water.
"I am trying to get home and check on my mom before I go to work, and I obviously can't do that," said Kevin Roland, whose mother lives in the area.
One resourceful resident even packed up a backpack and used a bicycle to get out of the mess.
Thankfully, none of the water made it inside any homes, but some said they had very little or no water pressure Tuesday morning.
"My water pressure is real low," said resident Anderson Pierre. "The water pressure is real low, and I don't trust the water, either. I don't want to use the tap water to drink."
Meanwhile, the water to the broken line was turned off, and most of the flooding has receded. Heavy equipment has been brought in to dig up a portion of the road so crews could access the break in the line.
Monique Damiano, of the city of Fort Lauderdale Public Works Department, released a statement at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, saying that crews have repaired the line and were working to fix the street. The street was reopened late Tuesday.
