Dad fed 2-month-old daughter bleach, Ocala police say
Carron Washington arrested; Girl taken to Gainesville hospital
A man was arrested in Ocala on suspicion of feeding his 2-month-old daughter bleach.
Carron Washington, 20, was arrested Sunday on aggravated child abuse charges.
According to police, Washington said he poured bleach into the child's bottle and fed it to her in an effort to help her breathing problems.
Washington spoke to reporters from jail Monday. He said he's in college studying pre-med, but didn't realize the bleach would hurt the child.
"I was told by a friend of mine that giving a baby a top of bleach -- just a top of it -- would help her breathe a little better," he said.
He said his daughter, Caelynn Washington, has suffered from chronic breathing problems since birth.
"This has probably been the dumbest decision that I've ever made in my life, and I regret it 110 percent," he said.
The child was taken to Shands hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Family members say the child is expected to be OK. She should come home from the hospital with her mother soon.
Ocala police said the child's mother was awakened by loud crying around 2 a.m. Sunday and found Washington feeding the baby. The woman said she took the child, who then vomited, and she could smell bleach, according to police.
Washington was granted a $25,000 bond, with the condition that he not see the child. An emergency custody hearing in set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Department of Children and Families.
Washington will be arraigned March 19.
