A boater is accused of trying to take a protected Queen Conch in the Keys, deputies said.
Monroe County Sheriff's deputies said they stopped William Adams of Byron, Georgia in Tavernier Creek on Thursday.
When they approached the boat, they said they saw many legal fish that Adams had spear fished.
But they said they also saw an illegal Queen Conch on top of a cooler.
Adams reportedly said he caught the Queen Conch so he could display it on his mantel at home.
The Queen Conch was still alive and was returned to the water.
Queen conch are managed under national regulation.
In the United States, all takes of queen conch are prohibited in Florida and adjacent Federal waters.
Adams, 63, was cited with possession of one Queen Conch.
