A gang of robbers picked an odd place to hide their stolen jewels, according to police.
It all started when officers began investigating two burglaries that happened Tuesday afternoon in Melbourne. Police said a box full of jewelry and a Nikon digital camera were stolen during the burglaries. The thieves got into the homes by breaking through sliding glass doors.
An eyewitness to one of the burglaries saw what was happening, called police and gave a description of the suspects' getaway vehicle, a silver or gray Chevrolet Traverse.
About two hours later, Martin County sheriff's deputies stopped an SUV matching that description on Interstate 95 in Palm City. After getting a warrant, deputies searched the car and found a container with Chinese food on the front console. They opened the lid of the container and said they found several pieces of jewelry, police said.
The jewelry was later confirmed to be those that were stolen in Melbourne, according to investigators. Deputies also found the camera in the back of the truck police said.
They arrested all four people in the SUV: Michael King and Henry Mims, both 19, Lavertzky Dareus, 18, and Nigel Prescott, 17.
They are charged with grand theft.
