A South Florida man was wounded when he was shot by a Palm Beach County deputy.
The sheriff's office reports that the deputy was patrolling a West Palm Beach neighborhood Friday morning and saw a suspicious man riding a bike. The deputy tried to make contact with the man, later identified as 20-year-old Dontrell Stephens. But Stephens threw the bike down and tried to run away.
Officials say the deputy told Stephens to stop and show his hands. But when Stephens reportedly grabbed a dark object from his waist band, the deputy shot him three times.
Stephens was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Authorities weren't immediately saying what the dark object was.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy.
