PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. -

Employees at Westwind Contracting in Pembroke Park know a thing or two about heavy excavating and road construction. Bobcats? Check. Backhoes? Check.

Furry animals? Maybe not.

So when a thirsty, tired dog showed up at their door last Friday, they weren't sure where to start.

Westwind superintendant Gary McAuliffe and other employees started posting photos and information online of the brown-and-white canine that seemed sad and lost.

Another employee, John Gianino, decided to foster the lost dog until an owner showed up.

At the same time, a heartbroken family from Pembroke Pines was frantically searching for their pooch, Sophie.

The Munoz family said Sophie somehow got loose, and was nowhere to be found inside their gated community.

So when Westwind employees took their found dog to Wag-n-Tails, a veterinarian in Davie, staff made a happy discovery: The canine had a chip, and its owners could be tracked.

Turns out, that dog was Sophie.

In what seemed like a miracle, she wandered 10 miles between Pembroke Pines and Pembroke Park without getting hurt.

On Wednesday, Westwind employees reunited Sophie with the Munoz family. McAuliffe and Gianino arranged to add their own information on Sophie's chip in case she ever decided to escape to Pembroke Park again.
