Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute's Rehabilitation Center continues to treat four pilot whales that survived a mass stranding in Fort Pierce.

A pod of 22 pilot whales stranded themselves at the Avalon State Park Beach in St. Lucie County on Saturday. Only four of the whales survived after a calf died on Monday.

"They are sick. They're fighting an infection of some sort. We're not exactly sure what that is yet," said Juli Goldstein, a FAU staff veterinarian. "They're somewhat stable but they're still in very critical conditon."

The whales continue to receive 24-hour care from experts and volunteers, and feedings every four hours, said FAU.

The whales will be sent to SeaWorld Orlando if they get better.
