MIAMI -

A Florida International University student remains in a coma after being hit by a car Friday afternoon.

Police are still looking for the driver who hit 43-year old Melita Jaric. They say the person did not stay on the scene after hitting Jaric with his or her car while she walked near her home on SW 11th Street near LeJeune Road around 4 p.m. Friday.

Jaric's family arrived from Serbia and New York early Saturday. They met with detectives at Jackson Memorial Hospital before speaking to doctors.

"We're just trying to hold tight and believe she is strong enough to pull through," said Natasha Jaric. "I don't think anyone would want that to happen to them. Its brutal someone hits someone to the point of dying and doesn't care."

Doctors had to remove a part of Jaric's skull to reduce swelling in her brain. Officials say she has been placed on life support.

Jaric was working on a doctorate in computer science at FIU. According to her sister, she had moved to Miami about four years ago to complete her studies.

Police have few leads on the case because no one in the area saw the crash. As of Saturday night, they did not even have a description of the car they are looking for.
