Firefighter dies after 90-foot fall from ladder
A firefighter died Friday afternoon after falling 90 feet from a ladder during a training exercise.
The firefighter fell from a ladder at Fire Station 61 at 2121 NW Third Ave. during a training exercise that was set to last all afternoon.
Pompano Beach fire officials said the firefighter, identified as 50-year-old William Elliott, was rushed to North Broward Medical Center after the fall and was pronounced dead.
Sandra King, of Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, said Elliott was at the top of the ladder, and another firefighter was also on the ladder below him. The other firefighter said he just saw Elliott fall to the ground.
Pompano Beach Fire Chief Henry Small said all safety measures were followed during training and Elliott was wearing a safety harness.
"He was one of the most skilled people and responsible people we know," said Small.
"Bill was one of the best firefighters we had in Pompano's history," said another firefighter.
Firefighters and BSO deputies gathered at North Broward Medical Center. At the hospital, dozens of firefighters from several different departments paid their respects.
BSO deputies escorted Elliott's body to the medical examiner's office.
"Everybody is just in shock right now," said Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher. "This is the first ever, in the Pompano Beach Fire Department, we've lost a life on duty."
The Broward Sheriff's Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
Elliot had been with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue since 1989.
He is survived by his parents, a brother and a sister.
