Fla. Gov. says no to higher contribution limits
Fla. Gov. Rick Scott says he won't support raising campaign contribution limits
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Gov. Rick Scott is coming out against an increase in campaign contribution limits.
Both the House and Senate are advancing bills this session that would raise the state's current $500 contribution limit. But Scott spokeswoman Melissa Sellers said Monday that the governor "can't imagine signing a bill" that would raise contributions by any amount.
Scott's opposition could doom the legislation.
It's unlikely the Republican-controlled Legislature could override a Scott veto. House Democrats have already come out against the proposal.
The House has passed a bill (HB 569) that would raise the limit from $500 to $5,000 for statewide candidates and from $500 to $3,000 for legislative candidates.
The Senate proposal would raise the contribution limit to $3,000 for statewide candidates but keep it $500 for legislative candidates.
