Fla. officials considering new protections for designated saltwater game, sport fish species
Florida officials are considering new protections for designated saltwater game and sport fish species.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission agreed to draft a proposed rule at its meeting Wednesday in Apalachicola.
One possibility is that commercial harvest, possession or sales be prohibited for species designated as game fish.
The sport fish designation would offer a higher level of protection by allowing only catch-and-release for those species with no commercial or recreational harvesting.
The commission plans to decide which species should be designated at its February meeting.
Members of the public can send emails commenting on the proposal to Marine(at)MyFWC.com.
