Former deputy convicted of theft, insurance fraud
Shawn Barber’s sentencing set for January
A former Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy was convicted this week of grand theft and making a false and fraudulent insurance claim.
Shawn Barber could face a maximum of five years in prison on each of the two charges.
In March 2008, Barber, then a BSO deputy, and his wife couldn’t go to a Def Leppard concert. Prosecutors said that in order to get the insurance money for the unused concert tickets, Barber used crash report forms from BSO to fraudulently prepare a traffic accident report.
Prosecutors said Barber used the fake report to support a fraudulent claim for $626.04 from the insurance company.
Barber’s sentencing is set for Jan. 27.
