CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

Gabrielle Giffords inspired the cheering delegates at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. She was accompanied by her friend, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

The former Arizona congresswoman received a standing ovation as she came to the stage.

Convention spectators had tears in their eyes when she finished the pledge.

She smiled broadly and waved enthusiastically to the audience as they chanted, "Gabby, Gabby."

Giffords was shot in the head at point-blank range while meeting with constituents outside a Tucson supermarket in January 2011. Six people were killed and 13 people were injured in the attack.
