Hialeah Police officer shoots burglary suspect

Man hospitalized at Jackson Memorial after officer-involved shooting

HIALEAH, Fla. – A burglary suspect was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after authorities say he was shot by a Hialeah police officer.

According to detectives, about 2 a.m., officers were called to a burglary in progress. When they arrived, they found a man running from the scene. After a brief chase, the man crashed his truck at the intersection of East 10th Avenue and 26th Street and was shot by an officer.

"As officers arrived, there was a subject fleeing the area and that's when shots were fired," said Det. Eddie Rodriguez.

"He was trying to steal something," said Melvin Garcia, who works at a neighboring business.

Several blocks in the area were roped off with yellow tape as detectives questioned neighbors and witnesses.

It is unclear whether or not the man was armed at the time.

Rodriguez of the Hialeah Police Department told Local 10's Ben Kennedy the man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in police custody.
