MIAMI -

A South Florida man is facing federal fraud charges after filing false claims for thousands of dollars with the BP oil spill fund, prosecutors said.

Jean Mari Lindor, 31, of Homestead has been charged with several counts of mail, wire and access device fraud. Lindor is being held without bail and court records didn't list an attorney for him.

According to court records, Lindor filed papers with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility falsely saying he had worked for a Florida Keys business and had lost income because of the 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He is accused of seeking a combined $37,000 on his claims.

The charges carry maximum sentences that could total decades in prison.
