MIAMI, Fla. -

Miami-Dade County chairman Joe Martinez is running for mayor in November.

Martinez released a statement saying he filed the proper paperwork Wednesday.

"What the residents of Miami-Dade County need and deserve is a leader," Martinez said.  "For too long bureaucrats have been attempting to lead our county and have failed."

His filing for mayor does not come as a surprise.  Martinez openly said he would run for office following the recall of former mayor Carlos Alvarez.

Current mayor Carlos Gimenez has not said if he plans to run again in November.

The district 11 seat that Martinez holds will now be open.

"I encourage residents who have a passion for public service and wanting to make a difference in the community to put their name on the ballot," Martinez said.
