MIAMI -

A judge has sealed the statements of a Miami couple charged with beating their adoptive daughter to death.

Judge Sarah Zabel said attempts to redact parts of the statements by Carmen and Jorge Barahona would make them unintelligible and ruled to keep them from becoming public record Thursday.

She is still considering whether to release other "voluminous" evidence in the case.

Attorneys for Jorge and Carmen Barahona asked to seal all evidence, saying the publicity could taint a jury pool and prevent them from receiving a fair trial.

"We would like to try to have our best shot in picking fair and impartial jurors," said David Peckins, Jorge Barahona's attorney. "And the best opportunity to do that would be from people who have not been overexposed to the facts of the case."

The Barahonas are charged with first-degree murder after the body of their 10-year-old adoptive daughter Nubia was found partially decomposed in the back of Jorge Barahona's truck. Her brother survived, but was badly burned after he was doused with a toxic chemical.

The Barahonas have pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
