Background: Trayvon Martin's mother. She and Trayvon's father, Tracy, divorced in 1999. She worked for the Miami-Dade county housing authority for 23 years, but has taken an extended leave from her job. She has been in the Seminole County courtroom every day, sitting in the second row.
Involvement in the case: After her son was killed, Sybrina filed an insurance claim for monetary damages with the company of the homeowners association of the development in which Trayvon was killed. The company asked the court to declare that they do not have to fulfill the claim, as the policy did not go into effect until more than a month after Trayvon was killed.
Sybrina has also joined with several legislators to fight Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which states that a person is permitted to use deadly force if faced with a reasonable perceived threat.
