A Lauderhill firefighter died after he was injured in an off-duty boating accident.
Joshua Schwabenbauer, a five-year veteran of the Lauderhill Fire Rescue Department, died Thursday.
Schwabenbauer, 26, was boating in the Haulover Beach area on Labor Day when he suffered a critical head and spinal cord injury, said officials. Schwabenbauer was found in the water by a bystander and was pulled into a waiting boat. CPR was performed by two off-duty firefighters who happened to be boating in the same area.
Schwabenbauer was transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Aventura Medical Center in critical condition. He was ultimately taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, a facility that specializes in traumatic injuries, where he died Thursday morning.
Funeral plans have not yet been finalized.
