Man arrested in fatal shooting over cigarettes
Man fatally shot at Mayo Howard Park
A suspect has been arrested, accused of shooting and killing another man in an argument over cigarettes.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said Roderick Ferguson, 25, and some friends were at Mayo Howard Park on Wednesday afternoon when Glenn Thervil, 30, got mad that Ferguson would not give him cigarettes.
Thervil pulled out a gun and threatened Ferguson, police said. After the incident, Thervil and two acquaintances left the park. BSO said the acquaintances admonished Thervil and told him to stay home.
However, BSO said, Thervil went back to the park and got into another confrontation with Ferguson, who pulled out a shotgun and shot Thervil, BSO said.
Thervil died at the scene, and Ferguson and some other people ran away, according to investigators.
Deputies found Thervil dead with a .32-caliber handgun in his waistband and a shotgun wound to the chest.
BSO used a K-9 team and a helicopter to search for Ferguson. A man who was at the park with Ferguson hid in a nearby house but came out when the SWAT team arrived, BSO said.
Ferguson was taken into custody just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday and will face a charge of first-degree murder, BSO said.
