Diver dies in canal crash

MIAMI -

A Toyota Scion was pulled from a lake in northwest Miami-Dade early Wednesday morning, hours after the car veered from the street and into the water.

It happened on Okeechobee Road just west of Florida’s Turnpike.

Three people were in the car at the time of the incident. Two passengers, a husband and wife, managed to swim to safety. However, the car's driver did not surface.

Rescue divers eventually pulled the 50-year-old man from the water and rushed him to Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah where he was pronounced dead. The man was an uncle of the surviving male passenger.

Investigators from the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol examined the car for any signs of a fresh collision. The surviving passengers claim to have been sideswiped by another vehicle, causing them to lose control and wind up in the lake.

An abandoned SUV was found about 500 feet from the lake with obvious signs of a collision, including a missing rearview mirror. The SUV was registered to a home in Naples, but its driver was nowhere to be found.

Investigators were trying to determine if the SUV was involved in the collision with the small black Toyota that veered into the lake.
