FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

Police are investigating after a man was found dead with gunshot wounds Tuesday night in his Fort Lauderdale home.

Gunshots were reported at a home at 1110 NW 48th St. just after 11 p.m. Officers arrived and found Nelson Heck, 66, dead with gunshot wounds inside the house, police said.

Fort Lauderdale police said that according to the preliminary investigation, they believe an unknown person went to Heck's home and there was a confrontation. Police believe Heck, a Vietnam veteran and retired FPL employee, may have exchanged gunfire with the shooter, but they are unsure whether that person was shot.

Police received a report of a burglary at Heck's home about 9 p.m. Monday, but they are not sure whether that was related to the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective William DeJesus at 954-828-5366 or Detective Juan Cabrera at 954-828-5581.
