CAPE CORAL, Fla. (AP) — A southwest Florida man faces a possible life sentence for shooting a Cape Coral police officer.
A Lee County jury found 21-year-old Yousel Rivera guilty Thursday of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm.
Authorities say Rivera — a documented member of the Krazy Getdown Boys gang — admitted to shooting Officer David Wagoner three times during a 2011 traffic stop.
Rivera's lawyer argued that the shooting was caused by a seizure, but prosecutors said Rivera fired the shots because he didn't want to be arrested.
State Attorney Stephen Russell said each of Rivera's shots hit their target. The News-Press reports that two of the slugs struck Wagoner's body armor, while the third hit his abdomen. He has since returned to work.
