A man was killed and two other people were injured Tuesday in a crash that closed the southbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike at Southwest Eighth Street.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a 1997 Toyota 4Runner was going south on the Turnpike just north of Southwest 40th Street when the the treading came off one of its tires, causing the driver to lose control. The SUV crossed the two center lanes and rolled several times.
Two of the five people in the vehicle were ejected during the crash. All were adult victims.
Two people were taken to Baptist Hospital. Three others were taken to Kendall Regional Hospital, one of them in critical condition.
One of the injured people, a 37-year-old man, has died, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Traffic was backed up for miles as police shut down the Turnpike in both directions, forcing drivers to exit at Southwest Eighth Street. All lanes of Florida's Turnpike have since reopened.
