SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. -

A man who abducted his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint and shot at an off-duty police officer has killed himself, according to authorities.

Police said Gregory Wright abducted Bernita Jones, his ex-girlfriend, at gunpoint in the 14800 block of Naranja Lakes Boulevard Circle about 7 a.m. Wright then ran with Jones to about Southwest 278th Street Avenue and U.S. 1, where an off-duty West Miami police officer confronted him.

Wright then shot at the officer, shattering her windshield, said police. The officer shot back but Wright ran away.

"He was brazen enough to shoot at an officer, so we knew this individual would not hesitate to use his firearm," said Alvaro Zabaleta with Miami-Dade police.

The officer wasn't injured.

Police said Wright was later found at a relative's house at in the 15200 block of Southwest 281th Street with Jones, a 41-year-old man, a 9-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl, and a 2-month-old girl.

Hostage negotiators began speaking with Wright, hoping he would surrender.

"We had all of our resources available and we, of course, were trying to come to good conclusion in the sense that everyone would come out safe and he would surrender," said Zabaleta. "Unfortunately, he did not choose that route."

When police entered the home, they found Wright had suffered a self-inflected gunshot wound. He died at the house.

None of the other victims were injured.
