Massive Mormon temple being built

Huge sanctuary can be seen off I-75

DAVIE, Fla. – It is one of the fastest growing faiths the South Florida area: Mormonism.

According to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, within the last year their congregation has more than doubled in sized in this area. This is just one of the reasons why the Mormon Church as decided to build a temple in Davie.

There are only 140 temples worldwide and just one in the state of Florida. It's located in Orlando.

That's why the new temple being built in Davie is such a big deal for Jim Robinson and his family.

Jim Robison and his family are active members of the Mormon Church.

"To have on in our back yard is a great blessing," he said.

A temple is not a normal church or chapel, where people come to assemble on Sundays. It's a sanctuary for members to make formal promises to God.

"A temple is where we believe we can be married for all time and all eternity not just until death do you part," said Robinson.

Robinson said a Mormon temple is the only place that you can make that sort of special covenant. That's why the buildings are so important.

Because Mormons believe the temples are the most sacred places on earth, only active members of the church can enter.

But for a limited time, during its grand opening the public will be welcomed to view the 28,000-square-foot building.

The temple is expected to open its doors early 2013.
