Massive statue part of Gulfstream expansion plan

Statue will be bigger than Statue of Liberty

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – With the $1 million Florida Derby just days away on Saturday, Local 10 has learned about a major expansion plan at Gulfstream Park.

The grandiose changes include a massive sculpture being cast and constructed in China that will eventually perch atop a 6-story dome at Gulfstream Park.

When completed, "Pegasus" will be larger than the Statue of Liberty and will be the center of a theme park located on the north side of the property, just off Hallandale Beach Boulevard.

The planned theme park will cater to kids and families.

"Pegasus is a 120-foot tall statue," said Gulfstream President Tim Ritvo. "We believe the park will be the biggest draw south of Disney World."

Along with the theme park, Gulfstream Park is also planning to build two condominium towers on the property.

Work is expected to begin on April 5, the day after this year's racing season ends.

No timetable was given for completion of this expansion plan.
