Miami Beach closer to hiring new top cop
List of finalists down to 11
The city of Miami Beach is getting closer to hiring a new top cop. The city announced on Tuesday that it has narrowed its list of finalists to 11 for its new police chief.
The finalists hope to replace former Miami Beach Chief Carlos Noriega who retired at the end of 2011. Noriega and the rest of the department came under fire during the July 4th weekend in 2011 after a dangerous ATV accident involving a bachelorette party and Miami Beach police officers. Two innocent people on the beach were seriously injured in the crash. Both officers, who were on duty at the time of the accident, were fired, along with their supervisor.
The city announced the following people remain in the running for the top cop job: Orlando Police Deputy Chief Eugenio Bernal, Former Miami Police Asst. Chief Thomas Cannon, Former Miami Police Deputy Chief Frank Fernandez, Waterbury Connecticut Police Chief Michael Gugliotti and Former North Miami Beach Police Chief Rafael Hernandez.
Also on the list of finalists: Bal Harbour Police Chief Thomas Hunker, Miami Beach Police Asst. Chief Raymond Martinez, Miami Gardens Police Deputy Chief Paul Miller, Hialeah Police Chief Mark Overton, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent Amos Rojas and Former Camden, NJ Police Director Louis Vega.
The city will choose finalists by Feb. 22 and send the list to the Miami Beach Commission for approval March 21.
