Miami-Dade Metromover station renamed for judge
Ceremony takes place Wednesday at 10 a.m.
A Miami-Dade transit station is being renamed in honor of the county's first African-American judge.
On Wednesday, the Arena/State Plaza Metromover station will be renamed the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Station.
In 1976, Ferguson became the first African-American to serve as a judge in the Dade County Circuit Court. Four years later, he became the first African-American to serve on the Third District Court of Appeal.
In 1993, former President Bill Clinton nominated him to serve as a U.S. District Court Judge, where he served until he died in 2003.
"By renaming one of our Metromover stations after Judge Ferguson, we honor a remarkable public servant whose landmark ruling helped improve the quality of life for thousands of Florida residents," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Ysela Llort in a news release.
The renaming ceremony will take place Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at Northwest 5th St. and 1st Ave.
