Miami-Dade Public Schools sets goal to raise $7 million
Money would provide each campus with wireless internet
Miami-Dade Schools raising money to go wireless
Miami Dade Public Schools has set a big goal.
The district wants to raise $7 million by the end of January.
If the goal is reached, each school campus will be provided with wireless internet.
To find out why wireless is so important to schools, Local 10's Sasha Andrade visited Felix Varella Senior High School. A portion of the campus is home to a new I Prep Academy that is almost entirely computer based.
Ashley Kerns and Cindy Saenz are just two of the student reaping the benefits.
"Rather than having to carry three textbooks to school every day, you carry one laptop," Saenz said.
"I have my computer, everything is in a folder, and a file. It's super easy to find, and my books are right there," said Kearns.
"It just makes everything a lot easier," said Saenz.
"It's clear that the students who have access to the internet in a wireless setting have an advantage," said Assistant Principal John Galardi.
The district wants to even the playing field. While they can't buy laptops for all students, the next best thing would be to provide a wireless connection that everyone could access. Any student who chose to bring a computer from home could use it.
The district is in a huge rush to raise the money. If they do so by the end of this month, the federal government will match each dollar with a $10 donation. That turns $7 million dollars into $70 million.
