The new director of the Miami-Dade Police Department was sworn into office Friday.
Former Circuit Court Judge Israel Reyes swore J.D. Patterson into office at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.
"I see people who wear this uniform every day, who come out and do a really difficult job ever day," said Patterson, "and they go places where other people would not want to go and they do things nobody else would want to do, but they them all for the purpose of making this community better."
Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced his selection of Patterson as director on Feb. 1. The county commission confirmed in four days later.
"Director Patterson's proven experience, leadership skills and unquestionable integrity make him the ideal person to lead our Police Department. He rose through the ranks and has a unique understanding of our community and the department's operations, its policies and management," said Gimenez.
