KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) — Autopsy results are pending for a Miami man who died while boating in Key Largo.
A Monroe County Sheriff's Office statement says 43-year-old Luis Fernandez was on the boat Saturday with his girlfriend when he jumped in the water to cool off. The girlfriend told authorities that as the current began sweeping him away, Fernandez grabbed a fishing line they had in the water but it broke. She tried to throw him a life preserver, but she said he was so far away at that point he couldn't reach it.
The girlfriend also said this was her first time on a boat and she did not know how to operate it.
The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded and located Fernandez' body.
