Missing girl found with sex offender
Abigail Lefevers found with Timothy Newman
FBI agents and Broward Sheriff's Office deputies located a 12-year-old girl, who had been missing from North Carolina since Sunday, with a registered sex offender.
Abigail Lefevers and Timothy Newman were found at the parking lot near a Wendy's on Hallandale Beach Boulevard about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The FBI did not disclose what led them to the parking lot, saying only that good police work helped them find the sex offender.
Witnesses in the parking lot saw authorities escort the child and sex offender separately.
Sharon Johnson said Lefevers was crying.
"I'm glad they found her. Oh my God," Johnson said.
"I'm just so grateful that we have the police force that we have that they nailed this guy and our children can go to bed safe tonight," said Brenda Woodward.
Lefevers was last seen at her home on McNeil Road in Newport, North Carolina, over the weekend. An Amber Alert for the teenager was issued Monday.
Newman, a registered sex offender and Lefevers neighbor, was the prime suspect.
Lefevers' dad is awaiting his daughter's arrival in North Carolina.
"I'm very grateful for all of the help out there. I'm totally stoked for her be back home with me," he said.
Newman was being held at the Broward County jail on an out of state hold. He was expected to appear in federal court on Friday.
