Mitt Romney arrives for South Florida visit
Romney to attend forum at University of Miami, fundraiser at Biltmore Hotel
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney landed at Miami International Airport on Wednesday afternoon for his visit to South Florida.
Romney landed just before 5 p.m.
Romney was scheduled to answer questions at a forum at the University of Miami just days after video surfaced of Romney describing supports of President Barack Obama as dependent on the government.
Several Cuban-American voters Local 10 Senior Political Reporter Michael Putney spoke with expressed their support for Romney.
"I still think the Republican party really embraces the Hispanic, Cuban-American community over the last 35 years and Governor Romney is doing a good embracing the principles," said Alfredo Gonzalez.
Those with tickets to Romney's forum lined up outside the BankUnited Center, including 13-year-old Stephen Marante.
"Why am I here? Because I care about my future, I care about what the economy's like, because I care about how the future is going to be for my generation," said Marante.
A small but noisy group of protesters gathered nearby, chanting, "We are the 47 percent."
At the private event in Boca Raton last May where Romney was secretly recorded, he also said: "We are having a much harder time with Hispanic voters, and if the Hispanic voting bloc becomes as committed to the Democrats as the African-American voting bloc has in past, why, we're in trouble as a party, and, I think, as a nation."
"Hispanics are open for either party to compete for," said attorney Jorge Luis Lopez. "I don't think we can abandon them and I think the emphasis that you're going to hear tonight I think is very important well placed."
After his stop at UM, Romney was scheduled to attend a private fundraiser at the Biltmore Hotel and then go to a rally at the Miami-Dade fair grounds.
President Barack Obama will also be attending a forum at UM on Thursday.
