A major announcement today for one of the candidates for Congress from South Florida.

Democrat Patrick Murphy announced that he is no longer running for the 22nd Congressional District. Instead, Murphy will face off against Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West in a bid for the new 18th Congressional District.

On his Facebook page, Murphy wrote, "Today, I am announcing that I am taking the fight to Allen West in District 18 and will defeat him in November. "

West announced on Jan. 31 that he was abandoning the 22nd District to run for the new 18th District.

On his campaign website, Murphy wrote, "Allen West can run, but he can't hide." Murphy also bragged that he has raised $1.4 million for his campaign war chest.

The new 18th District will stretch into Northeast Palm Beach County.

Longtime Broward Commissioner Kristin Jacobs and West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel are the leading contenders for the 22nd Congressional District.
