Neighbors against Redland trash center

Miami-Dade County Public Works Department wants to build trash, recycling center

REDLAND, Fla. – The Miami-Dade County Public Works Department hopes to build a trash and recycling center in Redland, but residents aren't thrilled with the idea.

The 10-acre parcel of land is west of Krome Avenue and just north of Southwest 290th Street.

"They just built a school a block away," said Patricia Milone. "They have buses letting kids out, kids riding bicycles."

The center would be a drop-off area for white goods, flat tires, and electronics.

"If you've got garbage on something like that, this stuff's going to be blowing in here on top of them," said Oron Bass with Bayside Tree Nursey.

"We get people throwing mattresses and stuff," said rancher Alberto Estrada. "With a dump here, that's just going to get so much worse."

"My main concern is property values," said Kerri Rickert.

Other residents are worried about protecting runoff in the well fields.

A representative from the Public Works Department said the goal is to provide every resident a trash center within five miles. The closest to the neighborhood is eight miles.

Workers at that center said a new facility would ease the overload.

"We don't mind going an extra three miles," said Milone. "I said well, I'm looking at your stuff. This looks like a done deal. None of us knew about this."

The county says there is a comprehensive design and some approval for the new center.
