Police shoot, kill man at gas station

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -

A clerk working at a South Florida gas station sounded a silent alarm late Thursday night, prompting police to shoot and kill a man.

The confrontation happened just after 11 p.m. at a Chevron gas station located at Southwest 312th Street and U.S. Highway 1.

The clerk told police that a man walked in to buy Tylenol. After he paid, the clerk said, the man demanded his money back.

The female clerk said she felt threatened and sounded the alarm.

"The clerk was scared and called the police, who told the guy to put his hands up and he didn't," said co-worker Desiree Barra.

Police said the man refused to cooperate. That's when they fired multiple shots at the man, who died a short time later.

The man did have a gun with him, police said.

Pedro Cardona said heard gunshots while riding his bike by the gas station.

Police have not confirmed the slain man's identity, but Cardona said an officer shot and killed his cousin, Danny Cruz, 17, a student at Homestead Senior High School.

"He would never have a gun. I know he wouldn't," said Cruz's aunt, Ivonne Garcia.

"This can't be happening. Why me? Why us?" said Cruz's sister, Sarah Garcia.

Cellphone video captured the aftermath as detectives set up crime scene to piece together what happened.

"All I want is justice for my nephew, and I'm going to find out what happened to him," said Ivonne Garcia.

Police are reviewing gas station surveillance video to get a better idea of what happened.
