Next phase of repairs to A1A begins in Fort Lauderdale

Sand placement will take place Monday through Friday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The next phase of repairs on State Road A1A began Monday following beach erosion left behind from Superstorm Sandy.

Workers began bringing sand to the beach between NE 14th Court and 18th Street, just north of Sunrise Boulevard, in Fort Lauderdale.

The sand placement will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is expected to take up to four weeks to finish.

County crews are stacking the sand at the ends of the beach. Florida Department of Transportation crews are installing metal barriers that go about 40-42 feet deep to keep sand from getting onto the roadway.

"I've been really impressed," said one man. "They've been extremely organized."

Due to safety concerns, those sections of the beach will be restricted during those hours.

High tide and Superstorm Sandy collapsed portions of the road into the ocean and destroyed parts of the beach.
