MIAMI -

A man shot by an officer after he rammed a police cruiser crashed into another vehicle Tuesday morning, critically injuring an elderly man, Miami-Dade police said. A second suspect is on the run.

It started at Northwest 79th Street and 35th Avenue in Miami-Dade when cops got a call reporting a home burglary. Police said the caller described a vehicle believed to be involved as a gray Isuzu.

An officer tried to stop an Isuzu leaving the area when it got violent. The officer ordered the driver and passenger out, but they refused.

The passenger bailed and ran away, according to police. The driver revved the engine and hit the police cruiser, Miami-Dade police said.

The officer shot the driver, and he drove away, police said.

"In fact, when the crash happened, the cops started wailing the sirens down by 36th Avenue, so they were onto them for a while," said a witness Ali Valle-Gonzalez.

Moments later, just down the street, the Isuzu hit a white car, injuring the driver.

"He did not look good at all, was bleeding from a couple different spots," said Valle-Gonzalez.

After the collision, the driver of the SUV the crash ran, but was later caught by police, investigators said. Miami-Dade police said he had a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

"He just high-tailed somewhere else, I didn't get to see what direction he was going," said Valle-Gonzalez.

The suspect and the injured driver were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Both were in critical but stable condition.

The officer was not injured.

The search continues for the passenger in the SUV.
