FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

A child was recovering from surgery after he was shot on Sunday.

A 79-year-old man opened fire on a 12-year-old boy, hitting him in the torso, Fort Lauderdale police said.

Family members identified the boy as TJ Neal.

They said Neal and some of his friends were playing football in front of an apartment along the 700 block of NW 12 Terrace.

The ball hit an apartment twice. On the second time, the elderly man who lived there came out shooting, according to relatives of the victim.

A wounded TJ and his sister, Shaqualie Neal, ran home to get help.

Neal was listed in stable condition at Broward General Medical Center on Sunday night.

Fort Lauderdale police took the elderly man into custody. As of late Sunday night charges were pending.
