MEDLEY, Fla. -

Frank Granda makes the same trek to work from his home in southwest Miami-Dade County most every morning without incident -- but not Wednesday.

When he exited Florida’s Turnpike, he ran into trouble. Granda was found in a canal along Northwest 106th Street at 95th Avenue, shot once in the chest.

A Medley police officer was on patrol just after midnight Wednesday when he spotted the front end of a pickup truck up against a guardrail with its lights on, radio running and driver's door open.

"Officers were on patrol around 11:50 last night," said Lt. Jack Young, of the Medley Police Department. "He came across a pickup truck that was against a guardrail. He approached the vehicle. Nobody was in there. He started searching the area and found a man clinging to the canal bank."

The man had been shot in the chest. The man was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition and is expected to live, officials said.

"At this point," said Young, "we just really  have no idea what happened."

What investigators do know is that Granda did not try and shoot himself. They believe he was trying to get away from someone.

"Possibility that he was close to the guardrail that runs alongside the canal there -- and then trying to escape from whoever it was -- possibly then jumped over the guardrail into the water trying to escape," Young said.

Granda, 40, is married with one daughter. He is a graduate of Miami Southwest Senior High School. Detectives believe he was on his way to work at Pro Transport and Towing, where he drives a truck that transports new automobiles to dealerships.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the Miami-Dade Police Department's Search and Recovery unit combed the eight-foot-deep, murky waters of the canal but did not find a weapon.

Around the same time, Medley detectives searched Granda's pickup truck for a weapon. Young told Local 10 that Granda has a concealed weapons permit. They found his holster, but no gun.

Detectives said they hope to interview Granda soon, in hopes of finding out exactly what did happen.
