MIAMI -

Powerball fever is taking over South Florida as the jackpot reaches a record $500 million.

Wednesday's drawing was upped to $500 million on Tuesday. You can watch the drawing on Local 10 News at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

On Tuesday, many South Floridians went out to have a chance at a new fortune.

"I'll have 20 dollars worth of power ball tickets," one man told a clerk as he bought Powerball tickets.

"I'm just letting you know don't buy any more because the winning ticket is right here," said Frank Tomas.

He is so convinced that he is the next power ball winner, Tomas has already written out multimillion dollar checks, "They're underneath my pillow at home."

When Local 10's Sasha Andrade ran into him at a shell gas station in Doral the pot was worth $425 million.

Tomas, however, has competition...a lot of it.

"The mega money for me!" exclaimed one ticket holder.

Because of the ticket buying frenzy, as the day went on, 425 million turned into a whopping half a billion dollars. To put that into perspective the winner could line up all of their dollar bills, place them end to end, and they would wrap the earth almost twice.

"The last jackpot win was October 3rd up in Delaware and since the 6th of October, we've rolled 15 times up to this number, so it's unprecedented," said Tom Dolan with the Florida Lottery. "It's the biggest number we've ever played for in Florida. It's the biggest Powerball jackpot of all time."

"Have you thought about what you'd do if you won this money?" Sasha asked Tracy Zamora. "Pay off all my bills," replied Zamora.

"I'm going to win this thing. I'm determined," said Tomas.

But someone may want to remind him of a teeny tiny detail. Your chances of winning the lottery are 1 in 175 million.
