Oreo is getting mixed reactions to a Facebook ad it posted Monday of a cookie with a six-layer, rainbow-colored filling along with the word "Pride."
The rainbow flag has been recognized as a symbol of the diversity found in the gay community.
The cookie maker, which is part of Kraft Foods, has received a strong response to the post, with more than 219,000 Facebook users indicating that they "liked" the ad, and generating about 36,000 comments.
However, not all of the comments endorsed the company's efforts to "Proudly support love!" Many of the posts indicated that followers were boycotting Oreo and Kraft products because of the ad.
Kraft spokesman Basil T. Maglaris told the Chicago Tribune that the graphic was in recognition of Pride Month in the United States.
Maglaris told the newspaper that, "As a company, Kraft Foods has a proud history of celebrating diversity and inclusiveness. We feel the Oreo ad is a fun reflection of our values."
He said that the positive comments to the Facebook post "far outnumbered" the negative ones.
Maglaris said the rainbow cookie is not planned for sale, but meant as part of the snack’s 100th birthday celebration.
